A Prague Family's Passage to India

A Prague family story. Two restaurants. One flood. Three decades of authentic Indian cuisine.

Some restaurants are businesses. Ours is a family story. Sanjeev Wadehra came to Prague carrying something you can't pack in a suitcase — generations of recipes, a lifetime's knowledge of spice, and a belief that Prague deserved real Indian food. On Pařížská, he opened Jewel of India and became one of the pioneers of Indian cuisine in Prague — for many Praguers, their first taste of authentic Indian cooking. It was named the 2nd best restaurant in Prague.

Then came the summer of 2002, and the worst floods Prague had seen in a century. Jewel of India was among the losses — the water didn't spare Pařížská. But the Wadehra family didn't leave. In 2009 they returned, reopening as Indian Jewel in the historic Týn quarter of Old Town. The name was new; the standard was higher than ever.

At the heart of the kitchen is Mohini Wadehra, whose traditional recipes have been the restaurant's soul from the very beginning — rich Butter Chicken and aromatic Chicken Tikka Masala, fragrant Biryani and wholesome Aloo Gobhi, tandoori kebabs grilled to perfection, and fresh Naan, Roti and lush Kulchas pulled straight from the Tandoor — a clay oven whose flames carry a legacy reaching back to the royal kitchens of the Mughal Empire.

Alongside her stands a brigade of honoured chefs, each brought from Northern India, each with decades of experience in Indian fine dining. It is the meeting of these two worlds — a mother's lifetime of knowledge and the precision of seasoned craft — that creates something Prague has rarely tasted before.

As word spread and tables filled, Indian Jewel outgrew Týn and moved to a larger home on Rybná 9, steps from the centre of Old Town, where it stands today. Whether you love grilled meats, follow a vegetarian or vegan diet, or are simply curious about the depth of Indian flavours, Indian Jewel is your gateway to India.

Sanjeev's son, Nilaansh Wadehra, grew up eating these dishes at the family table. Now he carries the story forward — into a new generation, and a restaurant his family built not once, but twice. Over 5,800 guests have left a review; hundreds have become regulars; a few have been heads of state — and today Indian Jewel stands as the number-one Indian restaurant in Prague.

The Tandoor still burns. The recipes still belong to Mohini. The Wadehra family is still here.

We hope you'll come and find out why. Welcome to Indian Jewel.
